More on Strikes

Some messages and photos received about the strike situation.

‘Thorncliffe kids are trying to get a Parkview type protest organised for Monday next week as they are angry that it's looking like Mr Wilson is going to punish the 50 odd who protested on the Thorncliffe banking even after he said they could!

Dr Potts ripped up a year nines petition right in front of them. They had gathered together a list of names saying they supported the protest but were locked in and she ripped it up saying 'it's got nothing to do with you!'

The kids are putting my generation to shame.’

‘I've posted pictures taken today at Parkview, the second day of action.  Pupils were not allowed into school until 2pm but a group of about 20 assembled at the Park Drive gate at 1pm.  They were soon joined by a further group of around 15 uniformed Alfred Barrow pupils and just 1 Thorncliffe pupil who was not in uniform.

A female member of Parkview staff persuaded the Parkview pupils to retire to the back of the school as senior staff were willing to talk with them.  More Parkview pupils, in uniform, arrived and sat on the grass near the gate and Alfred Barrow pupils joined them.  Two police officers instructed Alfred Barrow pupils to move onto the pavement and told Parkview pupils that all those in school uniform must go into the school building - at which point pupils removed their green tops!

Then Alfred Barrow pupils were berated by their headmistress, Dr Potts, who seemed to pop up out of a nearby tree.  One or two pupils caved in but the rest remained resolute.

After spending more than an hour standing in the hot sun without any word from the school authorities, parents decided to walk across the playing field to the school building to seek information.  Three police vehicles suddenly entered the driveway and several officers emerged.  They said parents had just minutes to clear the field or they would be charged with 'Causing a nuisance on education grounds'.  (Why not 'Loitering with intent to be informed'?)  The parents returned to the school gate without protest.

Pupils were released from school at 3.25pm.’
